I think it could be very useful to critically analyze the idea behind why some photographers took the pictures they did. I could post a few images from a series of work and students could say what the get from the images.
Video class could link good news programs from YouTube and comment how we could introduce ideas into our production.

This sounds like a great idea. Perhaps students could take photos and submit them as well, with supervision for appropriate content.
